BTEC Electrical Principles with Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning

Knowledge of electricity is essential for the safe installation and maintenance of commercial, industrial or household heating systems. Take this combined BTEC course to learn the important electrical principles and gain in-depth specialist knowledge and skills associated with RHVAC.

Explore health and safety issues concerning working with electricity and RHVAC systems. Study the principles of electricity, including study of the different units of measurement, the source of electricity, methods of production, and much more. Learn how to maintain RHVAC systems, and how to diagnose and correct problems when they occur. Discover how to install new RHVAC systems.

Requirements For Course

You must be over 16 to take this course. You must also be educated to at least GCSE standard D-G or hold an NVQ at level 1, or a GNVQ Foundation Certificate. Please note that parts of the course are mathematical in nature.

What You Will Learn

Health, Safety and Welfare

Examine the employer’s and employee’s responsibilities for health, safety and welfare in the workplace. Learn how to reduce risks in the workplace.

Heating

Explore clients’ differing requirements, and learn how to identify locations with special heating requirements. Examine local and central systems. Study comfort indices, internal and external design temperatures, infiltration rates and the effects of building exposure. Consider the relevant regulations, codes of practice and standards.

Ventilation and Air Conditioning

Learn how to design air conveyance systems and single-zone air conditioning systems. Explore commissioning, operational and maintenance requirements.

Refrigeration Technology

Explore the design principles for the selection and balancing of equipment. Learn how to install refrigeration and air conditioning plants. Examine the codes of practice and relevant legislation.

Electrical Principles

Explore the various components used in electronic circuits and learn their characteristics. Examine the differences between analogue and digital signals, and consider how these differences relate to control principles. Learn how both transformers and rotating machines are constructed, and discover their operational characteristics. Explore circuit theorems, as well as single-phase and three-phase circuits.

How You’re Assessed

You’ll complete four formative assessments and five compulsory assessments during your course.
